"Speed" painting practice to break way from studying.
~ 6 hours

I am not a fan of King Kong. I have never seen the movie. I just know he's a giant ape in Japan or something. I was going to paint Goblin from Spiderman but I couldn't find a decent picture.

EDIT: Far more polished version than original upload.

haha, in Japan? That's Godzilla. King Kong was on an uncharted island, probably nowhere near Japan. I'm pretty sure that not even the original black and white movie had anything to do with Japan :P

Anyway, it's a great painting. Great colours and expression (that goes for Kong too)

The chest bothers me a little. Maybe downward strokes would have worked better than cross-hatching. It looks a little rushed there (and yeah, I know it's a speed painting) That part just seems a little out of place - the rest is pretty polished, and shows the flow of the fur well.

I would have used larger brushes for the background (like you did with the sky) instead of having so many fine points like a spatter. It steals the focus a little, and I would think that having these parts out of focus would really highlight the face further.

Overall though, it's a pretty awesome piece.
Love the expression and fine details. You HAVE to watch the movie! That big monkey is just so adorable it made me cry when he died. :(

XD Shows how much I know about the movie. Wasn't there another movie about Gozilla and King Kong duking it out?

Thank you.

It was rushed. By the time I got down to the chest, I was rather annoyed at how time consuming the fur was.

Thank you for the suggestions! I will fix them as soon as I find the time.

I hope you were using a spackled brush, not a regular round one... because that would be insane. You know, I actually find painting hair very relaxing, but I never tried to paint SO much of it.
The face is amazing. Will you continue to work on this?

I was using a round one.... that would explain why this was so painstakingly tiresome.
Thank you.
I'm not entirely sure as of yet. It does have potential to be refined and polished into something a lot greater, but I'm really not a fan of King Kong or apes. At the time I just wanted to paint something.

I first paint the base of hair with a custom spackled brush (similar to the default "spatter" brushes, but with more space between the dots) and add details with a round brush on top. Turns out something like this: [link]

I get it. If you don't feel like it than just don't do it, it would be sad if it turned into a chore.
